Hello friends,
Thank you for your interest in San Juan Integrated Psychotherapy, LLC. I graduated from Naropa University (Boulder, CO) with a Master's degree in Contemplative Psychotherapy. This is a 63 credit program (many M.A. programs are 48 credits) that emphasizes truly knowing oneself, how to help others make lasting psychological shifts, and how to be aware of and not carry one's personal agenda into the therapeutic relationship.
I see all human beings as inherently good, though that goodness may sometimes be slightly or heavily clouded by neurotic behavior and confusion. I believe our basic nature is to love and feel compassion for others. Because of challenging circumstances in our lives, our cultural and familial training, and our genetic traits, we lose sight of that basic goodness and develop behaviors, thinking patterns, and ways of coping that may have worked at some point in our life, but do so no longer. This place of confusion or suffering/pain is where therapy and inner work begin.
I have been working with teens, colleged-aged adults, adults, couples, and families since 1993 in a variety of contexts - as a mountain and rock climbing guide, an Outward Bound instructor and staff trainer, in theater, in monasteries and spiritual retreat centers, in a group home, in educational settings, in Wilderness Therapy, and as a therapist. I have traveled the world and grown from my experiences of seeing the universality in the human condition - the struggles and the joys.
I continue my own development as a therapist through spiritual practice, therapeutic study and mentoring, in the work of therapy, in relating with nature, and through integrating my understanding throughout all aspects of my life - running a business, relationships, family, physical exercise, financial maturity, and learning how to best love others. In my free time I ski, climb, mountaineer, meditate, pray, do Yoga, read, spend time with family and friends, work for Open Sky Wilderness Therapy, guide mountaineering and rock climbing trips, and try new things whenever possible.
I invite you to join me in my lovely office in Boulder, Colorado for short-term or long-term therapy.
Sincerely,
Michael A. Lewis, M.A.
